EPDM (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) is a synthetic rubber derived from oil and natural gas. EPDM is a versatile, flexible roofing system ideal for use in a wide temperature range, and has a strong reputation for durability. An EPDM membrane is the only type of roofing material recommended for use in water collection systems. When setting up most types of green roof projects, a layer of EPDM will be installed to collect any rainwater for use on the green roof.
Because most EPDM is black and lacks the reflectivity of TPO, EPDM is generally used in colder, northern climates. However, EPDM may be a good solution if you already have an EPDM ballasted roofing system.
EPDM is applied in large rolls that vary in both size and thickness. EPDM can be fully adhered, mechanically fastened, or ballasted. Ballasted EPDM roofs are very economical on large projects when the structure can support the weight of the rock ballast. Seam tape is used to seal seams of sheets together to form a waterproof bond. Seams are treated with adhesive making the seams vulnerable over the long term and will eventually require maintenance.
